Show Up Network for Gun Safety
Action is needed
As of 2021, 47% of the adults who lived in Maine owned guns, with over 137,000 more guns added in that year alone.
Approximately 90% of gun deaths in Maine are suicides.
Young children are getting hurt by guns left unlocked at home and traumatized by practicing active shooter drills at school. Our parents and children are scared and frustrated.
Impact of current law
Even after this historic legislative session Maine is 25th in the country for the strength of its gun safety laws. We are not protecting our children, our communities, or ourselves. MGSC has several legislative priorities that would provide safeguards but we need your help.
Make your voices heard
Legislators tell us they need to hear more from gun safety advocates when considering solutions.
While Mainers support safe gun legislation, 2nd Amendment absolutists show up in large numbers with stifling results.
The Show Up Network (SUN) for Gun Safety works to expand the numbers of calls, texts, emails and personal appearances when gun safety proposals come before the Legislature.
It works
SUN was started in 2021 by Maine resident Nacole Palmer and in a very short time has had dramatic results:
Child endangerment statutes were amended to include certain unauthorized access by a child to a loaded firearm.
Maine’s Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) was mandated to provide an annual report on firearm deaths and injuries across the state, with specific information including whether the incident was intentional, accidental, or a suicide, and the age of the victim.
Guns were prohibited in state correctional facilities and jails.
A Safe Homes Program names September Safe Homes Awareness Month and authorizes grants for educational materials to create awareness of the dangers of unsecured firearms and prescription drugs.
A Stand Your Ground bill and a bill which would have allowed a loaded gun in a car parked on school property were defeated.
